Are you stuck for ideas on what to buy the person who seemingly has everything this Christmas? How about treating them to a carefully-considered, unique piece of art and supporting local artists in the process? There are tons of places to pick up an arty gift in Bristol, Bath and beyond, check out our list for some of the best:
The RWA have over 600 pieces of art from the 167 Annual Open Exhibition for sale online and in the gallery including two pieces by Adelaide Damoah’s (cited as THE artist to invest in right now by The Times). Prices start from £25 and include painting, drawing, print, photography and sculpture. Alternatively, purchase an Art Pass and gift somebody unlimited entry to the gallery for an entire year for just £15.
The fabulous shop offers take-home prints and books from the Foundation’s namesake and other notable photographers. You can also browse a large majority of the products in their online shop.
Where the Wall Bristol
Got a budding Banksy in your family? What better gift than a voucher for a laser-cut stencil art spray session with graffiti experts, Where the Wall? All ages and abilities can have a go and fledgling graffiti artists get to take their artwork home.
Similarly, Graft run graffiti workshops and offer gift vouchers for private, public and group sessions. Most adult workshops include a tour of Bristol's famous street art, an introduction to graffiti history, styles and techniques, a chance to design a graffiti name, and try your hand at spray-painting and stencilling.
Stokes Croft China finances the community work of the People's Republic of Stokes Croft. Inside you'll find ‘subversive’ English Fine Bone China, graffiti teapots, T-shirts, books, cards, original art and prints all created in their local studio and factory. They also run creative workshops for people who are keen to have a go at making their own unique piece of ware.
Bristol Museum’s gift shop (items also available to browse online) is filled with all sorts of treasures inspired by their collections and Bristol itself. There are over 1000 products from Banksy books, work by local artists, Bristol Blue glass, locally-made jewellery, children’s toys and souvenirs inspired by current exhibitions.
Another of Bristol’s museums, M Shed also sells unique Bristol-themed trinkets, prints from local artists, Stokes Croft China, Wallace & Gromit-inspired gifts, kid’s toys and gorgeous coffee table arty books. Currently hosting the Wildlife Photographer of the Year, you can get your hands on this Wildlife Photographer of the Year gift set for the animal lover in your life, which includes tickets to the stunning exhibition.
Arnolfini’s specialist bookshop is a one of the best independent art bookshops in the country, and a great place for tomes on contemporary art, design, literature, film and culture, plus postcards, gifts and posters. Look out for their annual Christmas Shopping Day (5 December) for 15% off everything AND late night opening from 10am until 8pm.
Spike Island is an international centre for the development of contemporary art and design, and a vibrant hub of creativity. Their shop features arty publications and you can find prints from co-founder Spike Print Studio here.
Neon Tiger, Bristol
A cross between a 17th century cottage and industrial workshop, this bespoke art and gift shop sell their own handpicked artworks, products and illustrative designs, alongside small press, and items lovingly handmade in the UK.
Blaze is one of Bristol's most well established makers co-op and gallery shops. Inside you’ll find a treasure trove of top quality products, almost completely made by hand by local creatives.
What started as a quirky card and poster shop is now a multi-award winning shop/gallery selling beautifully framed art prints and providing a fantastic bespoke framing service in Clifton's heart.
One of lots of independent art shops on Bristol's Gloucester Road, 7th Sea is an emporium full of handmade creations made by local artists and designers. Pop in to pick up art prints, and gifts ranging from T-shirts, prints and cards through to ceramics and jewellery.
Upfest Gallery, Bristol
Outside of Upfest (Europe’s biggest street art festival which takes place each summer in Bristol), you can seek out urban, illustration and contemporary artwork from some of the top Bristol, UK and International graffiti and street artists at Upfest’s gallery and shop in Bedminster.
Another creative co-operative shop and gallery run by artists and makers in Bristol. The eclectic range of products on offer inside come from merging designers and artists from Bristol and across the South West.
Established in 2011, Co-Lab have been handpicking innovative artists and designers from Bristol and the surrouding area to showcase their products from the written word, to art, fashion and jewellery.
A veritable Aladdin’s cave-full of local arts, paintings, affordable prints, jewellery, cards, gifts and crafts from over 50 Bristol artists.
Know someone who’s keen to hone their drawing technique, develop sketching skills or explore different materials? Why not treat them to a drawing class at The Edge? As well as life drawing, there’s also dance classes and wellbeing classes on offer.
Bath Humbug Art Market (right next to Bath Christmas Market) takes place at 44AD (28 November -16 December) and is a showcase of affordable contemporary art and unique design-led crafts. Discover everything from fine art painting, artist books, printmaking, textiles, ceramics and glass, all available to purchase direct from the artists and designers themselves.
Following on from that, 44AD's annual winter exhibition ‘Deck the Walls’ will run on 18 December - just in time to pick up a last minute arty Christmas gift! Original artworks start from £78.
Inside, the Holburne museum houses more than 6,500 pieces, including paintings from Gainsborough, Zoffany and Stubbs. Browse onsite or online to treat an art-loving somebody to a ‘Friends membership’ which offers free entry to the Museum and exhibitions all year round.
The colourful gallery shop sells a wide range of art books and souvenirs, cards, postcards and ceramics and products related to the changing exhibitions. Pop in to find the perfect gift or pick up a little something for yourself.
Amanda Brown opened this brightly-coloured shop with her partner back in as an outlet for her contemporary paintings on canvas, photographic art and cards. Inside you’ll also find artwork, gifts and cards by other local artists and designers which have been chosen to complement Amanda’s work.
A contemporary art gallery and bespoke picture framers on Hill Road in the North Somerset seaside town of Clevedon. Inside (and online!) you’ll find a trove of artwork, ceramics, jewellery, glass, paintings, prints and home accessories created by established and emerging artists, designers and makers, including some of the most collectable artists in the UK.
Located inside Clevedon Craft Centre, this vibrant working studio and gallery cooperative of resident artists is home to a regularly changing range of paintings, prints, ceramics, photography, woodturning, glass artefacts and other gifts.
